 You Asked - Business

You Asked:

How do you tell a client you’ve made a mistake?

Our Thoughts:

When things go off the rails (and face it, they often do in business), I believe in telling the truth...and taking accountability. When I said this once, someone added (more than half seriously), “or as much as you can without jeopardizing your relationship with the client.” In my experience, if you’ve been doing a good job for your client, then you will never get into trouble by saying, “We made a mistake. These are the ramifications and this is what we are going to do to make it right.” This will include paying whatever charges are necessary to make it right – letting the client know that this is what you are doing, and not bringing it up again in the hopes of getting kudos for how you handled the problem. Don’t forget, you made the mess; it’s only right that you sort it out.

Outside Opinion:

We know character when we see it, but what exactly is it? How do we define it? What role does it play in our getting results as leaders? What role does character play in our careers?

A key function of character in leadership is to engender trust in people, and the function of their trust is to have them take action for results. Few leaders come to grips with the challenges of character and so miss great job and career opportunities.
