| You Asked: |
I’ve recently moved to a new city and am having trouble making new friends. What can I do?
|
| Our Thoughts: |
“If you want to have a friend, be a friend”. When you’re new in town, this may seem like useless advice, because you feel like you don’t have anyone with whom you can try to be friends with in the in first place. Obviously, the first step is to meet people who have things in common with you.
Start at work or school. Make an effort to talk to your colleagues or the people in your classes. In the first week, you can easily sit with a different group each lunch, or go for coffee with different people, without anyone thinking it unusual. Simply start by saying something along the lines of, “Hi. I’m new and thought it would be nice to get to know the people who work/go here.” As you move from group to group over the first little while, people will understand what you are doing and be more welcoming than might be the case after you’ve been there a while.
Ask questions (and get their advice about how things work at your new firm); be interested in what they have to say. Volunteer some information about yourself, but don’t monopolize the conversation or hog the spotlight. Give them time to get to know you – and take the time to see if your new acquaintances share your values, sense of humour and anything else that is important to you. Once you’ve figured out which group you feel most comfortable with, start spending a little more time with them.
P.S. For tips on making a good first impression and on finding ways to meet people other than those you run into on a day-to-day basis, please read the attached article.

| Outside Opinion: |
Everybody's got one - that list of things you'd love to do. If only you had more time, or just a fresh start... Moving to a new city or even a new part of town can be the perfect opportunity to start something new.
