A couple of years ago I was hiking in the Rockies, aiming for the summit of the first mountain in the range. As the forested trail gave way to rock face, and what had been a merely steep incline now felt like a wall in front of me, overwhelming fatigue washed over me and thoughts of giving up danced before my eyes (along with the black spots). Instead I looked to the summit, up at the goal so clearly delineated against the blue western sky and resolved to make it to the top.
Seeing the beckoning mountain peak helped me to call upon the resources we all have buried deep inside of us. ...

Goals give you a purpose for taking life on. People who live without goals have no purpose and it is obvious even in their body language. They are on permanent idle, they slouch, they list from side to side. Their conversations dawdle. They telephone you: "Hey, I'm just calling. I wasn't doing anything, so I thought I'd call you." Well, don't call ME. I'VE got things to do.
